Twist drill blanks are held in special holding fixtured to preferentially heat only the fluted portion of the cutting tools for hardness characteristics necessary for the purpose. They are processed similar to the tapping tools in the Brubaker description. After hardening these tools are finish cut from the blanks in specialized grinding machines.
